Saving Money on Swimming Pool Pumps
With the ever increasing cost of electricity, everyone wants to save money on their power bill. The swimming pool pump is a major contributor to your homes energy use.
After installing an energy efficient pool pump it won’t be long before it pays for itself in electricity cost savings in comparison to a normal pool pumps energy use.
Energy efficient pool pumps are often variable speed and include state of the art permanent magnet brushless DC motors.
In order to maximise the effectiveness of the energy saving you need to run the pump on its lowest speed. You will need to run the pump longer than a pump running flat out and people often ask me, if the pump is running longer does that mean you lose your energy saving? The answer is no, although it is running longer the energy saving is still there as it takes a lot less energy to run water through the filtration system at low speed because there is much less resistance. Multi speed pumps are also extremely quiet when on their low speeds.
If you are going to run a suction cleaner or other high water using device such as a waterfall you will periodically turn the pump to a higher setting, when you are finished turn it back to its slow setting.
I make particular mention of the Pentair Intelliflo, and Davey PowerMaster Eco pool pumps.
The Pentair Intelliflo is a pump filled with new technology and has a 90% power efficiency which I liken to being the Rolls Royce of swimming pool pumps. It claims to be the quietest swimming pool pump ever built.
The Davey PM Eco pump has a 70% efficiency compared to a normal pool pump. Rated 8 out of 10 energy stars.

Pentair Intelliflo Pool Pump
The Pentair Intelliflo does what in the past took several pumps. They are ideal when linked with a control system such as the Pentair Easy Touch or Intellitouch. When linked they are fully programmable. It is simple if you want the pump to come on a 9AM at 2 horsepower and run for 2 hours to power your infloor cleaning system, then revert back to slow normal filter speed.
The control system will automate the turning of valves, so at the push of a button you can alter the speed of the pump, change a valve and divert water to your waterfall or water feature, spa jets, cleaner, or anything else!

Do you know when the Pentair systems gets 90% efficiency, and the Hurlcon Viron P300 only 70%? It is a given that the Viron is less efficient, or is it just the way Pentair have measured their efficiency?
